Sergeant Major Sean M. Parrish is the Senior Enlisted Advisor for the Defense Media Activity, Fort George G. Meade, Maryland where he serves as the advisor to the Director of DMA on matters of health, welfare and morale of more than 900 enlisted personnel assigned to eight locations in the United States and at 33 permanent overseas sites.
He entered the U.S. Army in September 2000, attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. SGM Parrish attended Advanced Individual Training at Fort Meade, MD and became a Public Affairs Broadcast Specialist (46R).
His first duty assignment was with the 49th Public Affairs Detachment at Fort Bragg, North Carolina whom he deployed with during OEF-1. Following that, he went to Korea and was assigned to American Forces Network – Korea. His duty positions there included Television News Anchor, Command Information NCO, Radio Disc Jockey, and Station Manager.
Starting in the fall of 2006 he spent three years as a Small Group Leader at the Signal Corps Noncommissioned Officer Academy Detachment at Fort Meade, Maryland teaching the Army Public Affairs Advanced and Senior Leaders Courses. He followed that with an assignment as the Public Affairs Operations NCO at U.S. Army Central at Fort MacPherson, GA and went with the unit when they moved to Shaw AFB, SC
In 2012, he went back to American Forces Network – Korea as the First Sergeant. While there, he was part of casing the AFN-Korea colors after the network’s nearly 70 years of service on the Korean Peninsula. The AFN stations in Korea became part of AFN-Pacific and his position became the AFN-Pacific First Sergeant.
Parrish then went to Fort Sam Houston, Texas where he served as the Senior Public Affairs NCO at U.S. Army South. In 2015 he was assigned to the Office of the Chief of Army Public Affairs regional office in Los Angeles, California where he served as the Army Liaison to the Film and Television Industry.
In July 2016, he attended the Sergeant’s Major Course, Class 67, at the U.S. Army Sergeant’s Major Academy at Fort Bliss, Texas. His first assignment as a Sergeant Major was as the Public Affairs Sergeant Major for the 1st Theater Sustainment Command at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
His most recent assignment within DMA was as the Senior Enlisted Leader for Defense Media Operations supporting communication requirements set by the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) and the Military Services.
SGM Parrish’s military education includes U.S. Army Airborne School, Unit Armorer Course, Primary Leadership Development Course, Basic Instructor Course, Small Group Instructor Course, Basic Non-Commissioned Officers Course, Advanced Non-Commissioned Officers Course, and Class 67 of the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy. He earned an Associate Degree in Television and Radio Broadcasting from The College of San Mateo in 1997 and a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Communications from Thomas Edison State College in 2009.
SGM Parrish's personal awards and decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (1 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal (5th Award), National Defense Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (w/numeral 4), Korean Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal (2 Campaign Stars), Iraq Campaign Medal (1 Campaign Star), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Ribbon (2nd Award), Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Valorous Unit Award, and the Meritorious Unit Award.
