Gene Brink is the Deputy Director of the Defense Media Activity (DMA), a Department of Defense Field Activity reporting to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs. In this position, he is responsible for advising and assisting the agency Director in all aspects of planning, managing and coordinating DMA mission and support functions and resources in six distinct lines of business.

His previous assignment was Director of DoD News and Production. DoD Production & News provides a comprehensive suite of communication products and services ranging from multimedia, digital media, digital print, live streaming and video-on-demand on defense.gov and dedicated social media platforms supporting DoD. DoD News informs millions of active, Guard and Reserve service members, civilian employees, contractors, military retirees and their families in the U.S. and abroad.

From 1996 to 2004 Gene was the Operations Manager for the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service (AFRTS) NewsCenter, Alexandria, Virginia. In this position, he was responsible for managing the day-to-day news production and operation of the NewsCenter.

Gene has worked in commercial radio prior to joining the U.S. Navy as a journalist, where he earned many broadcasting awards for excellence from the Navy Chief of Information, Thomas Jefferson awards; in 1990 he was recognized as the U.S. Navy’s Broadcaster of the Year. He served in Keflavik, Iceland, aboard USS New Orleans, homeported in San Diego, CA, and then he was selected to anchor the U.S Navy’s premier newscast, “Navy News This Week” headquartered in Washington D.C.

After leaving the U.S. Navy in 1992, Gene joined KCRG-TV, an ABC affiliate in Cedar Rapids, Iowa as a news anchor, reporter and Bureau Chief.

In 1994, Gene moved to Utica, New York as the News Director for the WUTR-TV Eyewitness News team. His team also earned awards from the Associated Press for Breaking News coverage and for a special feature, “Educating for Tomorrow.”

Gene has more than thirty five years of experience in broadcasting. He is originally from Waukon, Iowa and currently lives with his wife Janice in Greenland Beach, Maryland.
